There was no one beaming brighter than Sara, Hank (from SMURFS 2 production in Montreal!) and our first class of Determined To Succeed graduates this June. It was 7 years ago that Sara and Hank were inspired by our 12 high school graduates to create and fund Determined To Succeed… their decision truly changed the lives of these very determined students forever. We attended as many of their graduations as possible. The only people whose pride and joy matched or exceeded ours were their parents, many of whom did not graduate from high school. Kathy Rodriguez’s parents managed to snag seats on the Palisades football field with the students and filmed the entire ceremony! And Mrs. Rodriguez brought 2 trays of graduation cupcakes to share with fellow DTS students! At our May 31st dinner to celebrate the graduates, we asked each guest the following question and to share their answer with the graduates: Based on you own college experience, what single piece of advice can you offer our college-bound students? We will send each graduate off to college with a journal bound by the sage advice shared with them that evening.
We also asked the graduates the following question to share with our younger students: Based on your own high school experience, what single piece of advice can you offer our high school-bound students? The graduates shared their advice with their younger DTS peers at our picnic!
