A strong foundation of personal physical and mental health and wellness is vital to college success. Just as a skyscraper built atop a faulty foundation will likely sink, so will a student who heads to a demanding college environment without having had the time and space to practice self-care. Healthy and well students can maintain academic achievement levels and take full advantage of the opportunities to hone the executive functioning skills necessary to succeed in college and in life.
Implemented and overseen by our full-time Health and Wellness Director, DTS Health and Wellness education begins the summer before ninth grade and consists of One-on-One Mental Health Counseling and Topical Education and Practice in the areas of Fitness, Stillness, Nutrition, Self-Care, Hygiene, Body Awareness, Sex Education, Psychological Exploration, and Mental Wellbeing.
The myriad personal challenges in our students’ lives, from stress and anxiety to family trauma, pose enormous risks to their health, self-esteem, coursework, test preparation, and, ultimately, college success. By providing free, consistent access to a mental health care professional who shares a similar background with our students, we erase the stigma of therapy and eliminate the wait time to see a practitioner. Our Health and Wellness Director meets individually with all DTS students on a regular basis to assess their wellbeing, and determine what, if any, therapeutic support is needed.
