A Successful Fall Fundraiser

A huge thank you to Narda Malakzad and Lauren Stewart for creating the amazing first annual DTS Morning Health and Wellness Retreat on October 19th!  The event benefitted and celebrated the recent addition of a full health and wellness curriculum to the DTS program.  We spent the morning engaged in meditation, yoga, and an educational nutrition program led by celebrity nutritionist Kelly LeVeque.  Kelly shared her wealth of knowledge for establishing a healthy lifestyle that’s pragmatic and fulfilling, and we all enjoyed samples of her delicious smoothie bowls and other recipes.  Thank you to Kelly, our host committee, and all of our generous event sponsors.  We can’t wait…

Wonderful Workshops

This Saturday, DTS conducted two separate parent workshops.  Mimi led College Knowledge: The Path from High School to College, which was open to all interested DTS parents.  A small group of parents attended, but this allowed those who came to have all of their questions answered.  It also created the space for parents to connect with each other and learn more about each other. Leticia and Ocavio, parents of Alexa, member of the Hamilton 2021 Class, reflected:  “The workshop was very helpful and informative. We now understand the difference between the requirements needed to graduate from high school versus the requirements for a student to be accepted…

Melanie’s College Visits

Melanie, member of the Hamilton 2018 Class applied for and was accepted for “fly outs” to two prestigious colleges:  Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine and the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA. Bowdoin’s classes are much smaller and emphasize a very interactive curriculum. The largest class my host told me she has only had 16 students and the smallest class…

A Great College Visit

Saturday was a beautiful day to take a tour of Pomona College. Thank you to everyone who came and a special thank you to Emmanuel who led the tour of his alma mater. He walked us through the campus, and we saw the dorms where first year students live. We visited the library and looked at the stacks. We walked through the math and science building and got to experience what a real college classroom feels like, and we even bumped into a few students studying.  We ended our tour with lunch in the dinning hall, just like real college…

Stress-Relief Workshop

This past Saturday, Carmen held our first ever parent workshop to discuss how stress impacts our bodies and our minds.  Parents had the opportunity to differentiate between behaviors that buffer rather than successfully cope with stress, and they learned that even small changes may alleviate stress.  The workshop was well attended, and participants left with a special calming tea, an essential oil, and a list of different ways to incorporate meditation and other stress-relieving techniques into everyday life.
