DTS Outdoors

DTS Outdoors is a programming highlight of the year.  Last week, more than fifty DTS students, across all classes and schools, and the DTS staff spent three days, two nights at a nature retreat outside

of Los Angeles.  The program is designed to help students disconnect from the city and technology, connect with themselves and nature, bond as a group, and push themselves out of their comfort zones.  The space allowed students to ask questions and talk to one another about future plans and goals in an organic way.  For many of our rising 9th grade students, the retreat is their first time away from their homes and families, and serves as a safe step toward college readiness.

The DTS summer interns were joined by Mario, Chris and Isaiah, members of the College 2020 Class, to serve as volunteer camp counselors.  They led their groups in fencing, archery, high ropes, laser tag, arts and crafts, and team-building games.  They hosted a talent show, where students performed skits, sang Bruno Mars a cappella, and danced to the Cha Cha Slide.  Each evening ended, of course, with a campfire and roasting marshmallows.
